Trails West!
®   Festival 2008 Artwork Competition

The Trails West!
® Festival invites you to submit an entry for the 2008 Annual Artwork Competition.

We appreciate your participation and wish you good luck!

Concept of competition

Artwork should embody the spirit of the 2008 theme: Trails West!
®- Celebrating our Heritage. It will become the visual identification, or "logo", for Trails West! ®  2008 and the property of the Allied Arts Council of St. Joseph Missouri, Inc. The winning artwork will be featured on Festival buttons, promotional posters, T-shirts, merchandise, billboards, etc.

In addition, the winning original artwork will be framed and added to the festival's collection.

For those who aren't personally familiar with the Festival: it's a 3-day arts festival that celebrates the arts and St. Joseph’s unique cultural heritage. With over 80 different events, you'll find concerts, art and craft exhibits, children’s activities and more. For more information, visit trailswest.org.

OUR MISSION: Trails West!
® is an annual arts festival celebrating the unique cultural heritage of St. Joseph, MO. The interpretation of this heritage will include arts and crafts, music, reenactments, demonstrations, presentations, historic architecture, food, games and drama in ways that will appeal to people of all ages, income levels and interests. St. Joseph’s significant role in the expansion of the American West, especially the years before 1900, will be emphasized.

Rules of competition

1.   The artwork must be original.

2.   The artwork may be created in traditional fine art media or created electronically resulting in a digital file.

3.   Each entry should be no less than 8" x 8" and no more than 24" x 24". The artwork does not have to be square.

4.   Because of the diverse applications and printing methods used for the Trails West! ®   Festival artwork, two primary considerations need to be given to color. First, the artwork or logo must lend itself to full-color reproduction in magazines and billboards. This means the work must either be digital or "scannable," utilizing available technology, with the result being a Process Color (CMYK) file. The use of metallic inks or colors does not reproduce well by this means. Second, the logo must lend itself to 6-color printing for T-shirts. This means your artwork must utilize no more than 6 solid colors that do not contain any screens or transparent aspects. To satisfy the above requirements, you may submit 2 different executions of the same artwork. If you are unfamiliar with these printing techniques or terms please contact the Festival office for clarification.

5.   Trails West!®   Festival reserves the right to adjust reproduction art for optimum reproducibility to a variety of visual processes. The festival will seek the approval of the artist on alterations but will not be bound or limited by the artist's feedback. The selected artwork becomes the property of the Festival in return for the cash award.

6.   Original artwork may or may not contain the following copy: Trails West! ®  Festival August 15,16,17, 2008 (the dates may change at a later time). However, if your artwork does not contain the above copy, please indicate your preference for placement of a copy block.

7.   The winning designer for 2008 is ineligible for the 2009 competition.

8.   Artwork or design must incorporate original ideas of the artist. Additionally, because the artwork will receive widespread exposure, it is strongly suggested that the design not be a close derivative of an existing design.

9.   The artist agrees to indemnify and hold harmless Allied Arts Council of St. Joseph Mo., Inc, 1st Street Graphics, Western Robidoux and NPGCO from and against any damages or losses sustained as a result of any design which is not original.

10.  The artist will appear at the Patrons' Party (date to be determined) to sign commemorative posters. One night's lodging will be provided.

Judges

In designing your entry, please keep in mind that the Trails West!
®  Festival button, T-shirt, poster and other merchandise will be used for promotional purposes and sold as collector's items. In choosing the winning design, the judges will consider the following:

1.   Does the artwork or design capture the excitement and festivity of the Trails West! ® Festival?

2.   Is the artistic execution strong? Is the piece aesthetically pleasing?

3.   Is the design an appealing one that will encourage sales? Will the design adapt well and allow for expedient and economical reproduction to use on t-shirts, posters, buttons, as well as print and broadcast advertising?

4.   Is the artistic approach fresh and unique?

5.   To the best of the judges' knowledge, is the design original and not a close derivative of an existing design?

Allied Arts Council will select judges for the competition which may include a representative from Western Robidoux Inc., 1st Street Graphics,  Trails West!®  Festival and a representative from the arts community.
