Length:
30 minutes
Papa Doc brings a twelve string guitar and a few decades
of storytelling and singing experience. With a bit
of mechanical explanation and demonstration, he connects
music with science and fun with everything. He
performs traditional and original folk songs, personal
and published stories, including traditional African
folk tales. His rendition of "Tacky the Penguin"
gets children squealing with delight and grownups
laughing out loud.

weather broadcasting on television.
Students will learn basic weather terminology and
weather patterns in
Northwest Missouri
.
They will also have the opportunity to ask
weather and television related questions.

St. Joseph
musician Terry Brock
will perform classical and traditional music on the
violin. Students
will clap along to favorite hoe-downs and listen to a
beautiful Bach minuet.
Students will learn a brief history of the violin
and have an understanding of how the violin produces
sound. Mr.
Brock has performed background music in readings of the
Little House on the Prairie books, and students have a
special experience in listening to Pa’s fiddle tunes
come alive in the story.

Besides hearing Scottish tunes, students will
learn the mechanics and history of the bagpipe. Roger,

St. Joseph
’s premier bagpipers,
will also explain traditional Scottish dress.

Jordan-Isaacs demonstrates the basics of pastel drawing
and painting through a variety of techniques.
Evelyn will demonstrate pastels alone and with
other media. During
her program she encourages class participation and
provides supplies for the students to participate in
drawing and painting with pastels.

HAND SPINNER

Saundra
Keiffer is an enthusiastic hand spinner who can bring
her spinning wheel to your class for a demonstration of
the steps in spinning wool into yarn. She will
discuss the various plant and animal fibers and tools
used in spinning. Stories or a simple craft
featuring wool, yarn, weaving and spinning may be added
if desired.

historical background of the time between 1843 and
today. Persons and events can be highlighted to
match your unit of study. Examples include early
St. Joseph History, the Civil War, Inventors,

's Golden Age, and
Cemeteries as Historical Sites.

fascinated with colored glass. To inform about
this fascinating art form, artist Rick Rader offers
lectures, demonstrations, or class participation
pertaining to stained glass.

Blackfoot
Indian Tribe member Jack Teegarden tells animal stories
that explain Native American Indian culture.
Dressed in tribal regalia, he helps take young
people into the nineteenth century world which saw an
end to much of the traditional Indian way of life.
Mr. Teegarden can also discuss
Iowa
tribal culture and
beliefs to those studying local history.

LEWIS & CLARK EXPLORATIONS

Lewis & Clark in
Missouri
—conditions they
encountered and the impact of their explorations.
Mr. Teegarden is a member of the Corps of
Discovery re-enactors and traveled on a keel boat to
St. Louis
in 2005.
