MUSEUM
OF ART
Scheduling
a Tour
The
AKMA Education Department offers tours of the permanent
collection of American Art, the original Albrecht family
home, and temporary exhibitions. Tours are inquiry-based
and focus on helping students enjoy looking at art by
investigating the artworks through non-threatening and
objective techniques.
The
program supports curriculum standards with an
interdisciplinary approach. For example, docents combine
the general subjects of the American Colonial Period and
Westward Expansion with art criticism and
interpretation. The tour adds to knowledge gained in the
classroom, promotes critical thinking skills, and
engages the students in lively debates about the art.
Students will gain new perspectives about the meaning
and role of art as they interact with works by American
artists and learn the many ways artists have recorded
people, places, and events throughout our history.
Tours
range from 30 minutes to 90 minutes. We can accommodate
groups of 10 to 80 students. Please call at least two
weeks prior to schedule your visit. You may also request
specific themes or curricular units you would like to
see focused on during the tour, or have a docent visit
your class prior to the students’ scheduled tour.
Resources
The
museum provides resource materials and information on
objects in both the museum’s permanent collection and
temporary exhibitions to aid classroom instruction. The
teacher resource center contains art books, slides, and
videos from all art historical periods, as well as
related lesson plan ideas. The museum serves as
satellite centers for the National Gallery and the
St.
Louis
Art
Museum
—offering
supplemental slide kits, touch kits, and videos that are
available for loan at no charge.
Teacher
Programs
A
series of Professional Developmental workshops are
scheduled each academic year. These workshops teach arts
integration strategies and train teachers to better use
the AKMA collection in their classrooms.

Youth Concerts and the Musicians in the Schools
program. These programs focus on students in the
fourth through sixth grades. Plus, the Musical
Petting Zoo will be making tours of grade schools
throughout the year.
Youth
Concerts
are a cooperative project of elementary school classroom

Performances at 9:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on
October 9, 2008, will be held at the Missouri
Theater. Students will hear Prokofiev’s Peter and

Strauss’ Pizzicato Polka.
The
Musicians in the Schools program is presented by Saint

instruments and pieces they perform, giving students an
opportunity to ask questions. The Musicians in the
Schools program includes a string quartet, woodwind
quartet, brass quintet, and percussion trio. Musicians
perform a variety of pieces, from classical Mozart and
Beethoven to patriotic, jazz, and high-energy marimba.
