Performances & Tours for Students

ALBRECHT-KEMPER MUSEUM OF ART

Scheduling a Tour

Docent Guided: AKMA offers guided tours of the permanent collection of American Art (Colonial to Contemporary), the mid-1930s era Albrecht family home (William Albrecht founded the Western Tablet Company, manufacturer of the Big Chief Tablet), and temporary exhibitions (many of which feature regional artists).

The tour supports curriculum standards with an interdisciplinary approach. Docents discuss the general subjects of the American Colonial Period and Westward Expansion along with art criticism and interpretation. The tour adds to knowledge gained in the classroom, promotes critical thinking skills, and engages the students in lively debates about the art. Students discover new perspectives about the meaning and role of art as they interact with the artworks and learn the many ways artists have recorded people, places, and events throughout our history.

You may also request specific themes or curricular units you would like to see focused on during the tour. We can accommodate groups of 10 to 80 students. Tours range from 30 to 90 minutes. Please call to schedule at least two weeks prior.

Teacher-led Tours: Teachers are welcome to escort their students as part of a self-guided group. Group size is limited to 75 students, and we ask that you please arrange for one adult chaperone per 15 students. To best serve all groups, please call at least one week prior to schedule your visit.

Resources

The museum has available a wide selection of teacher resource materials to complement and enhance classroom instruction. The teacher resource center contains art-related books, slides, and videos from all art historical periods that may be borrowed for in-classroom use. For a listing of these materials, please contact the museum or visit the museum’s education webpage.

Our popular Art Touch Kits contain a varied selection of interactive items for in-classroom use. There are seven themed kits: African Art, American Art—Colonial Period, American Art—The Westward Movement, American Folk Art, Ancient/Mediterranean (Egypt, Rome, Greece), Native American Art, and Preschool (animals & colors). All kits include an art slide kit with educator’s manual, a cassette tape of related songs or music, 1-5 children’s books, 1-3 posters, and a selection of hands-on touchable objects. For example, the Native American Kit contains a kachina doll, Santa Clara black pottery, porcupine quills, deer hide, catlinite stone, turquoise, and raw and carded wool. Kits are available for up to two-week loans.

THE SAINT JOSEPH SYMPHONY

T

The Saint Joseph Symphony’s educational programs include Youth Concerts and the Instrumental Infusion program. These programs focus on students in the fourth through sixth grades.

Youth Concerts are a cooperative project of elementary school classroom and music teachers, Symphony staff, and musicians. Performances at 9:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on October 6, 2011, will be held at the Missouri Theater.

The Instrumental Infusion program is presented for 5th grade students each May by the Saint Joseph Symphony in cooperation with the St. Joseph School District and Missouri Western State University.  Fifth grade students are bused to MWSU and four sessions are presented over two days.  Each of the four sessions begins with MWSU music students presenting demonstrations of the principal instruments of the Band and Orchestra followed by a short chamber concert. The 5th grade students are divided into groups to try woodwind, brass, and string instruments for themselves. Teachers evaluate students along the way as they try out each family of instruments in order to help them determine what instrument would be the best choice for their next school year.

Student tickets are available for as little as $5 to all concerts during the season, and student tickets are half price in all sections.

Tickets for all performances are available by calling the Saint Joseph Symphony office at 816-233-7701; http://www.saintjosephsymphony.org      [ Return to Top ]
