MWSU Voice Faculty with Brendan Kinsella, piano Thursday, March 4, 2010 12:10 P.M.
Three of the performers are new to MWSU and the community: Susan Carter, soprano, Roger Hale, tenor, and pianist Brendan Kinsella. They will perform with MWSU colleagues, David Benz and Leslie Heinz-Thompson. Dr. David Benz joined the music faculty at MWSU in August 2004. In addition to his doctorate in music education from the University of Missouri (1988), he has degrees from Southwest Baptist University and the University of Kansas . Benz has taught choral music at the high school level in Missouri and Florida and has served as director of choral activities at universities in Missouri, Texas, and Louisiana. At both levels, Benz’ choirs have been noted for their tonal beauty, technical precision, and expressive artistry As a lyric baritone, he also remains active as a soloist. In 1986 he was chosen as the winner of the advanced division of the National Association of Teachers of Singing in Missouri. He is especially noted for his singing of French and German art songs. Susan Carter, D.M.A., soprano, has performed internationally with companies including the Dallas Opera, Liederkranz Society of New York, Berkshire Opera, Rochester Opera, Syracuse Opera, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Dallas Symphony and Denver Symphony, in leading operatic roles including “Lucia”, “Queen of the Night”, “Constanza”, “Donna Anna”, “Vitellia”, “Leonora” (Il trovatore), and “Lauretta”. Her oratorio performances includes soprano soloist in Mozart’s Coronation Mass at Carnegie Hall, the Southwest premier of Webber’s Requiem, Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Dallas Ballet and numerous performances of Messiah. Dr. Carter is certified as a Kundalini Yoga Instructor and is the co founder of The Well-Tempered Body, an organization providing workshops and master classes nationally on body awareness for performers. She currently serves as associate professor of voice and director of vocal studies at MWSU. Her doctoral degree in vocal performance is from the University of Texas. Dr. Roger Hale joined the faculty at Missouri Western State University in August of 2009. He received a Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Choral Conducting from the University of Utah and a Ph.D. in Choral Music Education and Conducting from Florida State University last May. He studied closely with John Cooksey, André Thomas, Kevin Fenton, and Clifford Madsen. He previously served as choir and band director in southeastern Idaho. Other conducting responsibilities included serving as director of the Bear Lake Utah) Community Chorus, University of Utah Concert Chorale, Florida State University Chamber Singers, Senior Citizen's Choir, and University Singers, an ensemble that recently finished a tour of the southeastern United States. Dr. Hale's teaching responsibilities include directing the Chamber Singers and the new Women's Chorus, private voice, aural skills, secondary music education methods, and supervision of student teachers. He lives in St. Joseph with his wife KayDe and their four children. Leslie Heinz-Thompson received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a Performance Emphasis in Voice from MWSU and a Master of Arts in Vocal Performance from Bowling Green State University. Leslie has performed as an alto soloist with the St. Joseph Symphony and is an active member of the St. Joseph Community Chorus. Other performing experiences include Gianni Schicchi, The Long Christmas Dinner, Macbeth, Lucia di Lamermoor, Street Scenes, Die Fledermaus, Company, Sweeney Todd, Godspell, and A Little Night Music. Currently she serves as an adjunct instructor at Missouri Western State University. She is also the choir director at Hope United Church of Christ at Cosby, Missouri, and maintains a private studio. Described as a “sensitive musician with an ear for color” by the Cincinnati Enquirer and “an astonishing, passionate and gifted pianist” by the Santa Barbara Daily Sound, Brendan Kinsella has appeared widely throughout the United States and Asia as a soloist and chamber musician. He earned his bachelor and master degrees in piano performance at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City as a student of Robert Weirich. Recently, he was a Solo Piano Fellow at the Music Academy of the West and worked under the guidance of Jerome Lowenthal. Dr. Kinsella began playing the piano at age 11 and made his concerto debut at 15 with the Kentucky Symphony. Since his debut, he has appeared as a soloist in concerti ranging from Beethoven to Barber with conductors such as Xian Zhang, J.R. Cassidy, and Gary Hill. Among his 2009-2010 appearances include solo, concerto, and chamber performances in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, New York City, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin. He presently resides in Kansas City with his wife, Shoko. In order to help defray expenses and to insure the continuation of the series, a freewill offering will be taken.
