SAVANNAH UNITED METHODIST CHURCHSavannah, Missouri
Although a Methodist Class was not organized in St. Joseph until 1843, Methodist class meetings were held in Savannah, Missouri homes as early as 1841, and were served by itinerant preachers, known as “circuit riders”, so called because they traveled between their charges on horseback. Although the Methodist denomination split “north” and “south” over slavery in 1844, the two branches of the Methodist Church in Savannah erected a brick building at First & Main in 1855, and continued to worship together until the Civil War, during which the building sat largely unused because of the divided loyalties of its members. In 1866, a lot was purchased at Sixth & Main, on which a small building was started for the Methodist Episcopal Church, however, it was not completed until 1871. It was replaced by a larger building in 1903. In 1900, the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, erected the present building at Fourth & Main, which cost $14,000, including a parsonage. This building is a variation of the Akron Plan featuring a large Sunday School Room with pews across the back of the sanctuary that could be partitioned from the sanctuary with a sliding door. The original pipe organ was free-standing in the northeast corner, and most likely had tracker action. It was replaced by the present organ, given in 1929 as a memorial by the Wakefield family. The two congregations elected to merge in 1938, one year before the denomination reunited.
