Huffman Memorial United Methodist Church Huffman Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church was organized as a class in 1889, and became a society in the following year. St. Joseph was in the midst of a major economic expansion at the time, holding the distinction as the country’s third largest wholesale distribution center, and soon to become a major meat-processing center. The church was named for Rev. Samuel Huffman, a pioneer Methodist minister, whose son-in-law, the developer of the newly annexed Wyatt Park Addition, gave a lot at the corner of 28th & Seneca, where the first building was erected at a cost of $3,000. The present building at 28th & Renick was completed in 1916. Walter Boshen was the architect. The congregation marched from the old building to the new location singing, “Onward Christian Soldiers”. The present pipe organ was acquired when the church built a new sanctuary in 1973-74. It replaced a II/14 tubular-pneumatic Bennett organ (Opus 851/1917), which was dispersed.
